Carrefour Taiwan fined for false advertising

TAIPEI - Carrefour Taiwan has been levied a fine of NT$3 million (US$88,300) for false advertising in a promotion that allowed consumers to exchange Government-issued stimulus vouchers worth NT$3,600 for double that value in Carrefour coupons, according to the Fair Trade Commission (FTC).

Carrefour is believed to be the first Taiwan retailer to be fined for a promotion connected to the government stimulus programme.
The Carrefour promotion offered NT$7,200 worth of coupons in exchange for customers’ Government-issued shopping vouchers, but the advertising did not make clear the limits posed on various products and services.

On its website, the FTC explained that it received numerous complaints from Taiwanese who learned of the limits by reading them on the backs of the Carrefour coupons. The limits included beer, spirits, cigarettes and services such as shipping and warranty extensions.

"We learned about it yesterday in the newspaper," said Dream Lin, public relations manager for Carrefour Taiwan. "We haven't yet received the official letter from the FTC, so there isn't much we can say."
