Carrefour scoops top spot in study of China retailers

French supermarket chain Carrefour has emerged as the leading retailer of FMCG products in China, according to a recent survey conducted by China market research company CTR.

Carrefour took first place with market share of 4.7 per cent, and channel penetration of 46.2 per cent. Nanjing Suguo Supermarket ranked the highest in terms of consumer loyalty (35.8 per cent), and purchase frequency -- 50 times per year. The survey found that local retailers were finding it difficult to keep pace with the major chains, with Jingkelong, Tiankelong and Huapu all showing drops in respective market shares. According to China's Ministry of Commerce, the retail market continued its strong growth (13.3 per cent) and was valued at Rmb 5.4 trillion (US$666 billion) in 2004. The study covered 43 categories in the FMCG sector, and included 10,000 households across 15 major markets.
