BEIJING Carlsberg has reportedly shortlisted three agencies as it searches for a long-term creative partner to handle its business in mainland China.

It is believed that DDB, Soho Square and Wieden & Kennedy are in contention for the business, after an initial round which also included Y&R, Euro RSCG and DMG.

Incumbent agencies Fallon and BBH, which previously worked on a project basis, are not involved.

It is understood that the brief covers the launch of several new Carlsberg variants next year.

In China, Carlsberg Green Label occupies a top-three position in most major cities, competing with the likes of Budweiser and Heineken.

The Chill variant, launched in August 2004, meanwhile, supplements Green Label's 'Authentic' positioning by targeting a younger audience.

The inclusion of Soho Square, meanwhile, is a surprise - the New York-based WPP boutique is believed to have set up its Shanghai operations a few months ago, to handle its Avon business.
