CAREERS: What it's like to work for ... Emphasis Media

Who's the boss?

Emphasis comes under the umbrella of Publicitas Promotion Network, so the big cheese is Daniel Hofer, the chief executive officer who is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Leading at a local level are Monica Woo and Peter Morgan, who head up the Hong Kong office.

There's never a dull moment when you're working in the inflight media industry.

At Emphasis, the diversity of the work ranges from creating the high quality custom magazines and filling up the ad spaces, to selling the latest movies to the airlines. We don't have a very big team but we reach nearly every corner of the world.

How many staff?

Emphasis has around 60 people in Hong Kong and over 20 offices around the world.

Publicitas has about 450 people on the payroll worldwide.

Marketing responsibilities?

We publish over 20 custom titles that reach about seven million readers a month, represent more than 50 inflight magazines worldwide and help 30 airlines with their inflight video entertainment.

So, you can imagine, we're pretty busy.

How do you get a job there?

Be innovative and creative but most of all, have a passion for working in the media industry.

Department or office transfers?

We're open to it, but it doesn't happen that often. It's more common for staff to travel to our other offices to exchange ideas.

For example, our creative director and photo director will soon be off to our office in Mumbai to spend a few days with the creative staff on Air India's Namaskaar.

Any training offered?

Always a possibility, but depends on the opportunities available.

Pay and perks?

Pretty good pay by industry standards and the usual perks.

Long hours?

We do the odd 16-hour day during crunch time when the deadlines are tight, but generally we believe long hours do not necessarily mean increased productivity.

I think a well-rested, happy person will produce better quality work than someone who's been turned into a zombie pulling all-nighters for the past two weeks.

Business travel?

Personally, not really. We have an extensive network around the globe and I can reach people via email, phone or videoconference at any time.
