Careers: Q&A with... Rob Gilby

Job title: Vice-president, network development and strategic marketing, Turner Entertainment Networks Asia What is your greatest work achievement? The launch of Pogo in India - to build a new TV network from a blank sheet of paper, launch in one of the most dynamic media environments in Asia-Pacific and work with a phenomenal team.

Your dream brand to work on and why?

Any brand with a goal to entertain and inform young minds.

What would you do if you weren't in marketing?

I'd be sitting in a recording studio in Bali with an ocean view, writing and recording songs.

What was your big break?

Meeting Steve Marcopoto, president of Turner Broadcasting, and having Steve and my ex-boss Marcel Fenez transfer me over a game of golf.

Who was your mentor and how did this person influence you?

I've been lucky enough that for, the last eight years, my bosses have all been mentors who have stretched my learning, trusted me with responsibility and packed in a lot of experience.

Is there a secret to your success?

A sense of humour, a love of media, passion for what I do, loyalty to company and team, and professional training.

How do you handle difficult clients?

With persistence, logical solutions, and a smile.

What advice would you give to the next person to do your current job?

Free your mind for the creative ideas, pay attention to the detail in the planning and execution, and understand your product.

What are you currently reading that will help you in your job?

Apart from Media, two books: Kidfluence by Anne Sutherland and Beth Thompson, and Kotler on marketing, by Philip Kotler.

Who is the business person you most admire and why?

Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch. They're both dynamic entrepreneurs who have built media empires that are legacies to their vision and innovation.

They are both highly competitive, have enviable energy levels and inspire those around them.
