Careers: Q&A with... Mildred Wong

Name: Mildred Wong Age: 35 Job title: Marketing communications manager, Motorola Asia-Pacific What is your greatest work achievement? I measure my achievement through performance (handset sell-through). What would be your dream brand to work on and why? Brands with excitng and innovative vision, and also the capability to achieve them - like Motorola. What would you do if you weren't in marketing? I have always wanted to work in advertising, so I've not really thought about anything else, except maybe being a chef because I like to eat. What was your big break? I have been very lucky with the agencies I have worked in - previously, I worked for Great, Freeway Communications and FCB. But I think my biggest break was being hired by Motorola in 2000. Who was your mentor and how did this person influence you? All my bosses, in their own unique ways, who taught me so much. Is there a secret to your success? Dedication and hard work are essential to succeed. Also, keeping a balanced lifestyle is very important to me. How do you handle difficult clients? With patience and understanding. What advice would you give to the next person to do your current job? You need dedication and to enjoy work. What are you currently reading that will help you in your job? I read everything from business newspapers and science magazines, to gossip magazines. I like to keep abreast of current affairs without thinking which one helps my job. Who is the business person you most admire and why? I admire small business owners, because they are always hands-on, and learn all aspects of their particular business. They have to balance their personal lives as well as their business, and I respect that. I also have a lot of admiration for people from the past - like Albert Einstein, for example, who changed the course of history.
