NAME: Michael Heldebrandt
JOB: Managing director for brand and marketing channel, Asia-Pacific,
FedEx Express
What is your greatest work achievement? I am proud of the work that we have done to live the FedEx brand both externally and internally. A brand is only as strong as the people that deliver it. What would you be your dream brand to work on and why? Japanese beer brands, for a few reasons: 1) I like beer; 2) Japanese beer is, in my opinion, some of the best; 3) they have very little market share outside Japan, so that would make the job more challenging.
What would you do if you weren't in marketing? Probably be running my own business.
What was your big break? My 'big break' came almost five years ago, when I moved to Singapore to look after the South Pacific markets, including Australia. It was a challenge and the sacrifice provided the opportunity of gaining recognition.
Who was your mentor and how did this person influence you? My father. His advice on various issues ranging from business to personal has been invaluable.
Is there a secret to your success? Although it is a common cliche, I believe that the 'harder you work, the luckier you get' and by working hard, I mean working smart as well.
What advice would you give to the next person to do your current job? Ensure you thoroughly understand the big picture and vision of the company - that helps you be clear and always on the right track.
Who is the businessperson you most admire and why? Armand Hammer, son of Russian emigrants to the US, who initiated the trade of grain from the US in exchange for fur from Russia, at a time when Russia was going through a period of starvation. He went on to buy a fledgling oil company and turned it into a billion-dollar business. I admire his efforts in business and also in cultural understanding and betterment.
