CAREERS: Q&A with ... Florence Yip, Nike Hong Kong

What is your greatest work achievement?

It has yet to happen.

What would be your dream brand to work on and why?

Nokia, LVMH, Starbucks, Gucci - all the ones who understand the power and value of a brand, believe in a dream and realise their product is sold not just because of its function per se in today's world.

What would you do if you weren't in marketing?

Running that small dessert cafe or accessories boutique around some Bohemian neighbourhood.

What was your big break?

Definitely it has to be the chance to join the 'Swoosh' family some two years ago.

Who was your mentor and how did this person influence you?

The double R's:Rosanna Hon (Nike's former Hong Kong marketing director who joined the Portland head office early this year) for her JDI ('Just do it!') spirit and Rita Hsu (managing director, consumer group, PCCW), for her incredible vision.

Is there a secret to your success?

Though I am nowhere near my definition of success, I think everybody should love what they do. And for the times when you score an A, ask yourself if you could have scored an A+. Although a C is sometimes acceptable. It all depends on the person - only you know better how high you should set the bar.

How do you handle difficult clients at work?

Try to put myself in the other person's shoes while amplifying my need to 'just want to get the job done' - that really benefits both sides. If this still doesn't work, close the deal soon and learn a lesson.

What advice would you give to the next person to do your current job?

Just do it, do more sports and imagine you are the consumer.

Who is the business person you most admire and why?

Apart from Phil Knight? Maybe Tom Ford (of Gucci), I would say he is truly a brand manager.
