CAREERS: Q&A with ... Debora Chatwin, Enterprise IG

Name Debora Chatwin

Job title managing director, Enterprise IG

What is your greatest achievement?

Helping to establish the Enterprise IG offer in Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific - beginning in 1995.

What would be your dream brand to work on and why?

I don't believe there are any dream brands ... but I like working with organisations that 'get it', and where we can work with a client/brand team to make a difference.

What would you do if you weren't in marketing?

I am in the brand and identity business and I can't really think of anything else I'd rather do. I get to work across industry sectors, learning a little bit of this, that and everything as I go along.

What was your big break?

Getting my first job at CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) as a researcher when I was still at university studying communications. That was it. I was hook, line and sinker for the communications field after that.

Who was your mentor and how did this person influence you?

I've had a few along the way. Jean Francois Dubois, a producer at CBC, Daniel Daigneault, another CBC colleague ... but here in Hong Kong, Kathy Travis, the former MD of Enterprise IG was the most fun person to work with and to learn from.

Is there a secret to your success?

This is starting to sound like an Oscar thank you speech. Well, first of all I would like to acknowledge my husband. A supportive partner is critical in our business because let's face it, the hours can be ghastly. I've been able to do what I've done in my career due to a supportive spouse ... and because I love what I do.

How do you handle difficult clients?

Difficult clients ... there's no such thing.

What advice would you give to the next person to do your current job?

It sounds as though I'm writing my resignation letter! I don't have any advice. Everybody has to set their own gameplan. And in any case, the next up to bat will have their own style.

What are you currently reading that will help you in your job?

Simplicity Marketing by Steven M. Cristol and Peter Sealey.

Who is the business person you most admire?

Haven't you seen the recent issue of The Economist? 'The overthrow of the celebrity CEO'. I never jumped on the celebrity bandwagon, business or otherwise. I think that everyday heroes are more interesting.
