CAREERS: Q&A with Arthur Chow, Manager, business development and marketing, Yahoo Hong Kong

Name: Arthur Chow Age: 33 Job title: Manager, business development and marketing, Yahoo Hong Kong

What is your greatest achievement?

During the Sars crisis, I invited a famous local artist to design a drawing which people could electronically sign on the Yahoo site to show support for medical staff. Over a few weeks, we collected more than 180,000 sign-ups, including those from overseas. It was a record breaking number. We printed thousands of cards and also posters and delivered them to hospitals.

Dream brand to work on and why?

This may be biased but it would be Yahoo. It is a highly recognisable global brand and it's about being fun, friendly yet professional and innovative.

What if you weren't in marketing?

I was previously a banker and if I were not given a chance to be involved in marketing, it is very likely that I would still be wearing my suit and tie, going to work as a banker.

What was your big break?

Taking the leap out of my comfort zone and getting myself into the web media business after being a banker for seven years. It broadened my experience and allowed me to be creative.

Who was your mentor?

My previous boss while I worked at a bank. He allowed me to demonstrate my strengths. He was a very approachable leader who had excellent people skills. The way he managed his team influenced me.

Is there a secret to your success?

Constantly improving myself. As the Chinese saying goes, 'There is no end to learning'. I am a good team player which is key as we always find ourselves working as a team in order to achieve the goals.

How do you handle difficult clients?

I try to look at things from their point of view and understand what they want and why they are being difficult. I try to maintain my cool and avoid letting my emotions go unchecked.

Advice to the next person to do your current job?

Passion. I think the person really needs to be passionate about the internet and the power of this relatively new and exciting medium.

What are you currently reading?

Now, Discover Your Strengths. It takes a different approach by focusing on a person's strengths instead of getting rid of one's weaknesses.

Business person you most admire?

There are a few, but I'd pick Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, who I've met. We've seen a lot of dotcom founders come and go, but he remains influential.
