CAREERS: Ng returns to Citigate Window as MD

The new managing director of Citigate Window Creative makes an unlikely confession: "To be honest, I'm not a very creative person," says Arnold Ng with a smile.

Ng is perhaps, at first glance, an unlikely candidate for the advertising and communication industry at all, with a degree in applied physics under his belt.

But Ng explains that what he lacks in raw creativity he makes up for in the ability to generate ideas through calculation rather than inspiration.

"I'm a very logical person so I'm very good at arranging things and logical thinking, he says. "Based on a logical process I can motivate and generate creative ideas."

Ng's career has given him responsibility over the years for high-profile brands such as Sony and Perrier, and Citigate Window Creative's client list now includes blue-chips such as Schroders and Merrill Lynch, along with Dow Jones and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

His relationship with Window Creative began in 1994 when he joined as a senior account executive. Since then he has twice left and rejoined - once to start up his own business, and once to work for what was then known as Hongkong Telecom. Ng says that ultimately, he couldn't stay away.

"When I was young, I wanted to look outside and experience more things. The first instance I left was to start my own thing, the second time was to go over to the client side and look at the communication industry from another perspective."

Ng has been an equity partner at Window Creative since 1998, and prior to this latest appointment was director of client services. Now, he is stepping into the shoes of long-time colleague Mark Amdur, founding partner of Window Creative and former managing and creative director.

Amdur says Ng's appointment has been a long time in the planning. "It's been planned since Citigate's acquisition of our company. We had the goal to grow the brand together, after which I would leave to focus my attentions on my long-term passions - film-making, music composing, writing and art."

Ng says his move has been a smooth and gradual shift over the years, rather than suddenly being thrust into the top job.

"I've been actively doing the management of the company together with Mark for a long time, and every year I've taken on more responsibility, so it doesn't feel like a big change, he says.

In the future, Ng says Citigate Window Creative will continue doing what it does best - providing a range of services spanning advertising, corporate and promotional literature and video.
