Careers: Casbaa accredits first Media College graduates

The inaugural Cable & Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (Casbaa) Media College has awarded its first certificates of accreditation to six students from the industry.

Winning students included Christopher Pattinson, ESPN Sports; Yvonne Tay, Star Group; Jasmin Wong, Turner International Asia-Pacific; Lawrence Ng, Sony Pictures Entertainment; and Peter Giakoumelos and Daniel Joseph of Discovery Networks Asia.

"I believe this course is especially beneficial to someone who has been in the pay-TV industry for a while and needs a fresh perspective about his or her field of work," said Yvonne Tay, advertising sales and integrated marketing, National Geographic Channel. "The course offers students a chance to reflect upon how we usually do things and challenges us to think out of the box and also plan strategically."

The course, open to both Casbaa members and non-members, ran from April to November. Six media-specific modules made up the course, including media selling, presentation, media negotiation, media leadership and account management, strategic thinking and creative thinking.

Marcel Fenez, chairman of Casbaa, said: "In 2005, the college will build on these foundations and expand to include additional modules and an international stream."

The programme was developed in 2003 as a media-specific training school with a focus on sales and marketing. The college aims to enhance the skills of existing sales and marketing executives while also exposing management executives to different areas of the media industry.

Other participating pay-TV companies have included CNBC Asia, BBC World, MTV Networks Asia, Nickelodeon, StarHub and HBO Asia.
