TELEVISION AND BROADCASTING BUSINESS IN CHINA?

Q: Hi Helpline, I am looking to seek out opportunities in the media industry in China. I am a native English speaker with five years' television and broadcasting experience and have relocated to Shanghai recently because of my partner's work. Are any English programmes available, maybe something for MTV or the Disney channel? What is the current status of TV broadcasting in China? Will it be one of the fast growing industries in Shanghai? Otherwise which industry or what kind of jobs in relation to my experience would you advise me to apply for? Would very much appreciate your guidance in this matter.

A: Kellie Grimsley, consultant - Advertising and Communications, Hudson Recruitment, replied: "There are a growing number of English language programmes in China. The most popular channels are produced by Shanghai TV (STV) and International Dragon TV. They currently offer several hours of English programming daily, covering topics such as news, cookery, travel, sports, home shopping, lifestyle and fashion. MTV and Channel (V) programmes for China are produced in Mandarin, and Disney does not have much live TV programming.

"These stations do hire expatriates to host, produce and direct the shows but they usually require some level of Mandarin language skills. You could work for one of these channels and could be considered for a potential entry-level position. The pay would not be high and would only support a basic standard of living. However, the experience and exposure to the broadcasting industry in China would be invaluable, and would certainly lead to other exciting opportunities.

"With the changes brought about by the deregulation of the media sector as a whole, the market is experiencing considerable and rapid growth. There is a general feeling of optimism throughout the industry, with many predicting that the growth rate will continue to increase at a rapid pace. Shanghai and Beijing are the two cities that are spearheading the industry's development. However, if you take into consideration the number of provinces in the country, all with their own regional programming, the growth potential is huge to say the least!

"As the saying goes, 'it's not what you know, it's whom you know', and in a city such as Shanghai, getting out there and meeting people is a highly effective way in which to secure a fantastic opportunity, or to at least get a foot in the door. I cannot emphasise enough the power of a good network.

"Other than the TV stations, independent production houses, advertising agencies and events and communications companies may also offer opportunities for someone with your experience and expertise. China is a dynamic and an exciting market and it is really up to you to make things happen. Good luck!"
