Cambodia works on bid to cut poll violence with 141

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia's National Election Committee (NEC) has tapped Cordiant's integrated, marketing services network 141 to develop a campaign to discourage violence and intimidation in the run-up to the country's national polls in July.

The agency will produce five, 60-second television commercials, and coordinate a PR plan, for launch early next month. Although Cambodia is currently racked by political instability, the NEC is determined to illustrate the futility of violence. It wants to encourage a climate that creates the conditions for the staging of a free and fair election.

The agency won the brief by using storytelling - a traditional Khmer form of communication - as the main means of conveying the NEC's message.

Stories will be presented within a modern, sophisticated framework, to encourage people to work for a better Cambodia.

Chris Luck, 141 Cambodia general manager, said: "This is the first time in history that the Cambodian NEC has ever advertised.

The NEC handed the assignment to 141 following a pitch involving local and multinational agencies as well as non-governmental organisations.
