Bright outlook for digital, says GroupM

SHANGHAI - Digital is projected to benefit from the slow growth and decreasing popularity of China's news-papers, according to GroupM.

According to the media agency’s China media forecast, ‘This year, next year’, the internet is expected to show 65 per cent growth in advertising revenue this year and 40 per cent growth next year, overtaking newspapers and outdoor advertising.

Emerging media, including LCD screens and mobile, is predicted to be the real winner, with growth forecast at 82 per cent in 2008 and 47 per cent in 2009.

It is believed that the introduction of 3G technology will increase the importance of advertising in the mobile space, which only brought in US$102.5 million in 2007.

While newspaper spend is projected to show steady, single-digit, growth, it is dwarfed by the dramatic boom in the combined adspend for internet and digital advertising - which is expected to reach $3.6 billion this year, and $5.2 billion next year.
