BRANDING: Design choice: jbl creature - Ben Lui, Managing director/creative head, Igoo Communication

Men shouldn't grow up. Men should have their toys, whether it's something very expensive, like a Porsche or a Benz, a boat, a computer or even speakers for the computer.

As a die-hard Mac user - well, most art directors are - I was never able to make up my mind about buying a speaker for my computer.

That's because most speakers are designed for PCs and don't look good.

I would go so far as to say that some actually look ugly.

But JBL has just launched its speaker, the JBL Creature.

It's the most gorgeous speaker I have ever seen. More importantly, its pure white or metallic silver colour and sharp design look make for a perfect match with my 17-inch "world's biggest monitor" Powerbook G4 or even the brand new G5 desktop 12-inch white iBook.

With their great design, these computers make some great toys, but the Creature has to be the greatest accompaniment yet.

It's amazing that such a small gadget in its price range can provide such wonderful sound effects. It wouldn't be fair to compare it with a $10,000 alter- native, but, as an apple to apple comparison, it's in a class of its own. My first Creature was a gift from my best friend and I bought one for home use and another for an art director. With JBL's latest metallic blue version, I now have a wider range to pick from.
