Bidding war for English FA rights intensifies in Asia

HONG KONG - The value of the broadcasting rights to televise the English FA Cup and the England national football team's fixtures is expected to treble in Asia, with ESPN Star Sports (ESS) and Goal TV believed to be leading the bidding.

Currently controlled by ESS for the majority of Asia, the new contract being tendered is expected to sell for US$40 million, a major leap over the US$15 million deal negotiated in 2003.

A second round of bidding is currently underway with the incumbent up against Goal TV - which is reportedly aligning with local platform operators such as Starhub and Astro.
