Beleagured AIG searches for PR support

HONG KONG - Beleagured insurance giant AIG is searching for PR support after its brush with bankruptcy, in a bid to rebuild consumer and employee confidence in the region.

While the company already works with Fleishman-Hillard, it is believed to be pitching the brief out to agencies in Hong Kong. The development comes amid continued speculation that AIG will be required to sell some of its profitable Asian operations to pay off a US$85 billion loan from the US government. In many Asian cities, AIG, together with subsidiary AIA, have been flooded with phone calls and enquiries from customers seeking reassurance.

In 2007, some 70 per cent of AIG’s life and annuity profits came from Asia. The company was founded in Shanghai in 1919.
