Beijing to ban new airlines and cut flights

BEIJING Concerns for safety have led China's aviation authority to scale back flights at the overstretched Beijing Capital International Airport and ban new airlines before 2010.

China’s airlines have carried 19% more passengers so far this year compared with 2006, outpacing the number of newly qualified personnel, air space resources and airport services.

China’s three biggest airlines – Air China, China Eastern and China Southern – have each cancelled ten flights a day from the airport from August 15.

The three airlines are set to cut a total of 336 flights before October 27.

Similar restrictions will be put in place at other airports with high traffic. These airports are yet to be named.

Domestic carriers will also face tighter controls on fleet expansion, and those currently awaiting their licenses to operate may find requirements more strict.
