Beaven denies Initiative/UM China merger

GLOBAL - Initiative global chairman and CEO Richard Beaven has denied local reports that his agency will merge with IPG Mediabrands sibling Universal McCann in China, but noted that back-office integration between the two brands remains a continuing trend.

"There's been so much speculation, but that’s just a fact of life,” said Beaven. “It is borne out of financial and operational alignment."

Initiative Greater China chairman David Liu pointed out that the establishment of the Mediabrands structure in China, which will house the two agencies, will not stop the two agencies retaining a separate identity. Universal McCann China is headed by CEO Manpreet Singh.

Beaven added that the decision to remove the Asia-Pacific leadership role at Initiative, which resulted in the departure of King Lai last week, should not lower the agency’s profile in this region. He said new regional representative Roger Camplisson would "build profile" in the region.
