Bates Asia loses two senior executives in HK and S'pore

HONG KONG/SINGAPORE: Bates Asia has been hit by two senior resignations: Chris Leong, the Hong Kong managing director, and Wendy Tso, regional business director based in Singapore.

Leong has been appointed president of Grey Global Group's Southeast Asia operations covering Malaysia, Singapore and the IndoChina markets.

Her new Kuala Lumpur-based role takes effect on August 1, when she replaces 10-year Grey veteran John Burbidge, who is quitting to establish his own business in Malaysia - something he has been dreaming of "after three decades of working in corporations".

Tso, meanwhile, has not announced her next move, however, it is believed that she is looking to return to China.

No replacement is being planned for Tso, while Bates Asia president Jeffrey Yu will take over from Leong.

Leong has 17 years' experience on both the client and agency sides of the communications business, the last seven at Bates. Her new assignment marks her return to Grey where she established and ran the agency's promotions arm in Malaysia between 1992 and 1994. Leong's new post marks a natural progression in her career. "I've managed agencies at the country level so it's a great opportunity for me to take the next step in learning about regional management."
