BASF appoints Universal, increases Asia focus

HONG KONG - German multinational chemical giant BASF has selected Universal McCann as its global media agency of record after a 10-month review of its media business that also included MindShare.

The appointment will see Universal manage the firm’s media planning and buying, worth an estimated $15 million, from a base in Hong Kong across a total of seven markets in Asia, with a reported focus on China, India and Japan.

Meanwhile, Wieden & Kennedy Amsterdam will oversee BASF’s above-the-line creative communications across Europe, Asia, Latin and North America.

The world’s largest chemical company with over 160 subsidiaries, BASF has recently increased its focus on Asia, having invested over $8.5 billion in production sites in the region since 1990.

No one from Universal McCann was available to comment on the win.
