Aw to helm Singapore Tourism Board

SINGAPORE - Aw Kah Peng will take over from Lim Neo Chian as chief executive officer of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), starting 1 January 2009.

Lim, who is stepping down to spend more time with his family and explore new challenges, will continue in his role as deputy chairman of STB.

Lim has been the deputy chairman and chief executive of the STB since October 2002 while Peng is currently the assistant managing director of industry at Economic Development Board (EDB) and has worked with the government body for 17 years. Lim’s achievements at STB include the launch of the ‘Uniquely Singapore’ brand in 2004 and also the launch of Tourism 2015, a strategic blueprint to position Singapore as a destination of choice for leisure travellers, business events and those seeking healthcare and education services.

In June this year, the island state recorded its first decline in visitor numbers since 2004.

In the first three months of 2008, visitor numbers to Singapore grew year on year by six per cent. But in April and May just 0.8 per cent more tourists visited Singapore compared to the same period in 2007. In June, Singapore's tourism sector recorded its first decline since March 2004, falling by 4.1 per cent.
