Asia agencies win major metal at World Press Awards

ASIA-PACIFIC - Three Asia agencies - two from Singapore and one from Malaysia - were awarded top honours by the judges of the inaugural World Press Awards.

Golds went to McCann Erickson Singapore, with ‘Joker’ for the National Council on Problem Gambling, Ogilvy & Mather Singapore with a series for Touch Community Service, and Y&R Malaysia’s ‘Bullets’ for Soroptimist.

Eight others won gold, including AlmapBBDO Sao Paolo, Dublin’s Chemistry, DDB London, Leo Burnett Johannesburg, TBWA Paris and Saatchi & Saatchi New York.

“Copy is far from dead and, in fact, may be making a comeback — if indeed it ever went away,” said chairman of the jury, Neil French. “Humans still communicate with words, not semaphore, and the ad world seems to have begun to remember that.”

Asian agencies won nine out of a total 27 silvers and 22 of 41 bronzes. Ogilvy & Mather Singapore and McCann Erickson Singapore each won two silvers, while McCann Singapore scooped seven bronzes. Y&R Kuala Lumpur took home five silvers.

The judges included former worldwide chief creative officer of WPP Neil French; Tham Khai Meng, co-chairman and regional CD of Ogilvy & Mather Asia-Pacific; Mark Tutssel, worldwide CD of Leo Burnett; Marcello Serpa, ECD of AlmapBBDO Brasil; Jeremy Craigen, ECD of DDB London; chairman and ECD of The Jupiter Drawing Room, South Africa, Graham Warsop; and author and former Batey creative chief and author Jim Aitchison.
