Alibaba launches new open platform

BEIJING - Just days after announcing consumer-based auction platform Taobao.com's merger with digital advertising exchange service Alimama, Alibaba Group announced the launch of the Taobao Open Platform, which enables third-party programmers to develop e-commerce tools and products for the site.

The move comes as Alibaba Group looks to leverage revenue from the popular platforms to further compete with rival Baidu, which began closed beta tests of an e-commerce site poised to directly rival Alibaba.

According to Group chairman Jack Ma (pictured) in reports, he aims to make Alibaba the world's leading e-commerce platform within ten years, outpacing even Western rival e-Bay.

Alibaba’s dominance in the e-commerce industry has also attracted competition from Chinese portal Tencent, which announced a new ad-exchange platform on the site of its platform TenPay, a digital payment service.
