Aegis buys 51pc stake in Korean digital operator

Media and market research group Aegis has bolstered its interactive operations in Asia, buying a majority stake in Korean digital marketing specialist, AgencyW.

Before the buy, the two companies had been working together for a year for sportswear brand Adidas. Agency W, originally a subsidiary of Korea Telecom before spinning off as an independent two years ago, also counts HP Korea, Joong Ang M&B and Kiwoom.com, as well as Korea Telecom, as clients. Last month it won the zuji.com travel portal brief. AgencyW will operate alongside Aegis's other digital properties in Asia-Pacific, WWWins with offices in Taipei and Shanghai, and Australian op OneDigital, as part of its recently launched network of digital communications firms, Isobar. "In many ways, Korea leads the world in interactive activity," said Isobar Asia-Pacific president and executive director of Aegis Media, Kim Walker. "Getting a solid partner in this world was absolutely key to our strategy." Walker said he was close to adding another member to Isobar Asia-Pacific network, with general negotations with four others underway. Aegis bought a 51 per cent in AgencyW from the company's founder and CEO, Jong-Iyul Baik. The company employs about 20 people.
