SINGAPORE - Club Penguin, a snow-covered online wonderland where children can play in a safe virtual environment, has launched in Southeast Asia.

Ad-free virtual world Club Penguin is now accesible to children and families in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines through a monthly subscription service.

The snow-covered island populated by colourful, animated penguins was started in March 2005 and partnered with the Walt Disney Company in August 2007 to provide safe online entertainment for children and families.

"Children and families in Southeast Asia have really embraced Club Penguin and it was important to us to respond to that demand by making it easier for them to purchase memberships in the virtual world," said Robb Beeston, head of Disney Online Studios for Asia Pacific.

The online entertainment is reported to be popular by 52 per cent of children that use it regularly. Individual research showed that after game playing, the most popular activity was reading.

Since its launch from its headquarters in Kelowna, Canada, the virtual world has expanded internationally and now has teams located around the globe.
