Acer taps McCann for Thai accounts

BANGKOK - Acer Computers has awarded its US$3 million Thai media and advertising business to McCann WorldGroup.

The IPG agency saw off pitch contenders Fareast DDB and Euro RSCG to win the two-year contract that runs until 2009.

McCann Erickson will handle advertising; Universal McCann takes on media duties. The account will be run by Venus Romsaitong. The brief is to contemporarise the Acer brand and build on its ‘empowering technology’ proposition. “Acer has some cool products, and our brief is fairly straightforward: make the brand cooler,” said Mark Ingrouille, president of McCann WorldGroup Thailand.

The Taiwanese company became the world’s third-largest PC maker when it acquired Gateway for $710 million in August last year. In Thailand, Acer competes with the likes of Lenovo and Dell.

“McCann is still dogged by an unfounded reputation that we’re a packaged goods agency. This win proves yet again that this isn’t the case. We have Microsoft, Intel and now Acer,” said Ingrouille.
