The move follows a competitive pitch involving a number of undisclosed agencies. The shift follows a review after the incumbent opted to leave Sydney and the October 2003 arrival of a new MD for News Interactive, Nic Jones, the former head of Yahoo Australia and New Zealand. Jones has also previously worked as a sales director at rival newspaper groups Fairfax and Ninemsn, where he helped to build their interactive divisions.
News Interactive is now the third-largest online publisher in Australia, according to internet measurement company Red Sheriff. It now reaches 5.8 million visitors each month via online sites including News.com.au, CareerOne, Australian IT, Fox Sports, CARSguide and RealEstate.com.au. It also operates the websites for News Ltd's metropolitan newspapers, including The Australian and The Daily Telegraph. The appointment involves rolling out a number of new strategies, which are currently confidential, said 2iC founder Catherine Stace.
