ANALYSIS: Reinventing the game pays off

The past year for top agencies in Australia and New Zealand has been defined by ‘reinvention’. From strategy planning to business offerings, the agencies have concerned themselves with fighting to stay relevant in an increasingly challenging market.

The Creative Agency category sees a bit of a tug-of-war between Leo Burnett and Colenso BBDO. Leo Burnett won Gold in Australia on the back of reinventing its 80-year-old business model by launching a new strategy and full-service media. However, Colenso BBDO nabbed Gold in New Zealand with its focus on direct and data marketing. At the finish line, both agencies tied were awarded the title of Australia/New Zealand Creative Agency of the Year.

In the Media Agency category, OMD took top honours in New Zealand and across the sub-region due to the success of its shift from commodity-based media planning and buying to a strategically-led agency specialising in business-focused communications solutions. In Australia, the Gold award went to the independent agency Match Media.

Atomic 212 emerged as top Independent Agency in Australia and New Zealand crediting its US$72-million billings surge to its full-service offering. The title for Specialist Agency of the Year in Australia and New Zealand went to Dentsu Aegis Network’s search and performance arm, iProspect Australia.

Top PR honours went to Australia’s Red Agency which is dedicated to making its clients famous.

The list of individuals honoured includes OMD’s Aimee Buchanan, Atomic 212’s Jason Dooris and M&C Saatchi’s Ben Welsh.
