Happy Diwali: Ad Nut's roundup of festive ads

As Hindus celebrate Diwali on Wednesday and Thursday, our ad-obsessed pal Ad Nut takes a look at ads from Petronas, Lenovo, Flipkart, Malaysia Airlines, Foodpanda and more.

The festive bells are ringing louder as the end of the year draws closer. Before Ad Nut goes into high gear for the coming onslaught of Christmas ads, let's take a look at the campaigns brands around the region have come up with for the Festival of Lights this Thursday.

The rambunctious bunch of kids are back with their antics to usher in the festive season. As can be predicted, all ends well when Arathi gets over her embarrassment at the exposure of her secret crush. Petronas campaigns released this year have lacked the depth that its earlier works are well known for, especially when compared to the widely acclaimed piece last year. The reccuring young cast has starred in Chinese New Year, Keamatan and Eid video spots for Petronas this year.

Lenovo India
This TVC has gathered close to 13 million views combined on both Lenovo India's Facebook and YouTube pages. Ad Nut wishes that the otherwise heartwarming piece on a reluctant retiree had not ended with such a blatent sales pitch. So much so for subtlety in product placement.

Agency: Lowe Lintas

Flipkart again returns its kid cast, and it seems the Indian ecommerce site has a tradition of casting children dressed as middle-aged adults with adult voiceovers. Ad Nut thinks some woodland creatures would make fine additions to such campaigns too. 

Malaysia Airlines
There's nothing like some energetic tabla beats to bring on the festivity of Diwali. Ad Nut likes the creative use of in-flight lighting.

The Chicken Rice Shop
Ad Nut scoured the net for an Indian song and dance number and is elated to have finally found this piece. Often there is little required of festivity ads except showing human friends having some jolly good times.

The Home Alone franchise gets a Diwali and college makeover in a refreshing take on festive campaigns. Seeing as more Indian youths are partaking in sharing-economy services, Ad Nut hopes that Foodpanda will not put dabbawallas (tiffin lunchboxes) out of business.
