Can’t find a clean public toilet? Buktupup to the rescue

BuktuPup is a new microsite that helps travellers in rural Indonesia find clean, private restrooms hosted by locals—even in remote tourist spots.

A new microsite, BuktuPup (Book-to-Poop) is revolutionising how travellers in Indonesia find hygienic public toilets, especially in rural tourist hotspots where clean facilities are often scarce. Created by Dentsu Indonesia and Microlax, BuktuPup connects travellers with private, clean restrooms hosted by local residents.

On the BuktuPup microsite, users can easily locate nearby toilets, browse photos, read ratings and genuine reviews, and then book their preferred restroom through WhatsApp messaging with the host. By integrating public restroom data from Google Maps, BuktuPup ensures wide coverage, making access to clean toilets just a few clicks away, even in remote areas.

This service not only provides comfort and relief for travellers, but also creates income opportunities for local hosts who open their homes to visitors. Since its pilot, BuktuPup has grown to include 213 toilets across 27 tourist destinations throughout Indonesia.

The accompanying case study video captures the essence of BuktuPup with a lighthearted, humorous tone. It cleverly describes the all-too-familiar travel dilemma of searching for a clean toilet as a real “SHITuation,” showing how BuktuPup offers a timely and practical solution.

Indra Sugiharto, senior brand manager at Microlax Indonesia, explains, “It’s part of our mission to make relieving constipation easier. With BuktuPup, we’re not only helping travellers find clean restrooms, but also creating a positive, on-the-spot experience with our product.”

Cipta Purnamagiri, creative group head at Dentsu Creative Indonesia, adds, “BuktuPup addresses a universal travel challenge in a fresh, creative way. It enables direct collaboration with local communities, generating real benefits for them. This spirit of collaboration and insight-driven creativity truly brought BuktuPup to life.”

Campaign's take: Who hasn’t wished for a clean toilet when travelling, especially in remote areas? BuktuPup is an idea whose time has come, solving a genuine and often overlooked problem. While it’s primarily aimed at those experiencing bowel issues, the service will surely benefit many others. Plus, it’s a win-win: travellers get relief, and local hosts earn extra income.
