Some 1,000 DBS customers with Starhub mobile phone plans will start an eight-month-long trial of mobile payment services starting today.

The project is a collaboration between DBS Bank, transport card issuer EZ-Link, digital security company Gemalto, MasterCard and StarHub.

Candidates can pay at EZ-Link and MasterCard PayPass terminals with their mobile handsets, for products, services and public transport such as buses and MRT.

With a system that is SIM-card based, users can use any model of handsets to make payments, as opposed to previous trials where only certain models of handsets could be used.

This pilot scheme is to test the viability of mobile payment services in the future, with the intention to commercially launch the service in Singapore late next year.
