Optus’s Mike Smith moves into global role at Singtel

SINGAPORE - Mike Smith, managing director of marketing for Australia’s leading telco Optus, will take on a global role as chief commercial officer for parent company Singtel’s Group Digital L!fe.

The new digital division was set up in March this year to develop new products over mobile and digital platforms to increase the usage of data applications and consequently drive profit growth.

Group Digital L!fe is keen to focus on applications in the retail, entertainment and banking spaces. The division was responsible for the US$321 million acquisition of mobile advertising firm Amobee.

In his new role, Smith will be in charge of driving sales of the group’s digital products. He will also be responsible for expanding products and developing a strong digital brand, according to to the company.

“Michael possesses deep expertise and insights into the Australian consumer,” said Allen Lew, CEO of Group Digital L!fe SingTel. “I am confident his appointment will bring to life many of the innovative ideas and distinct services that SingTel is introducing into the global market.”

Optus said it will announce a replacement for Smith’s role in the new year.

Austin Bryan, vice-president of L!festream, Group Digital L!fe, will move to Optus. He will report to Kevin Russell, CEO, consumer Australia.
