The division, named, for an undisclosed reason after a typeface, will be headed by former chief creative officer at McCann New York, Joyce King Thomas.

King Thomas left McCann two years ago as part of a global reorganisation of the network's leadership by former global CEO, Nick Brien. Her return comes just a month after Brien's replacement by Harris Diamond

She served as CCO from 2004 through 2010 duiring which time she co-created McCann’s iconic “Priceless” campaign for MasterCard, which debuted in 1997. She was responsible for expanding the campaign to more than 100 markets around the world.

King Thomas will be based in New York and will report to Luca Lindner, president, Americas, Middle East and Africa, McCann Worldgroup. As president, she will lead a team that includes Richard O’Leary, currently global account director for MasterCard, as managing director; and Devika Bulchandani, managing director for global strategy, as global strategy director.

McCann XBC aims to offer the focus of a small integrated team with the "scale of McCann".

“Everything a global brand does should come from one distinct positioning and purpose,” said King Thomas. “McCann XBC is being launched to ensure that MasterCard gets the creative work they deserve in every medium in every country in the world, and to ensure that every piece of MasterCard communications springs from their unique point of view.”

Update: McCann got in touch to explain that the name, "ExtraBoldCondensed" was chosen to express "key concepts behind this new dedicated unit: bold, focused strategic and creative solutions, working through a concentrated and integrated global team effort".
