The business - worth an estimated US$50 million - was handed to the WPP agency group following a pitch process that took place at the end of last year.

The win includes planning and buying duties for all Yili dairy brands in the mainland market. According to a source, GroupM will create a Team Yili structure to service the account, led by GroupM agency Maxus.

Yili has worked with a number of agencies, with the bulk of its account handled by Vizeum, according to a source.

On top of its high-profile Beijing Olympics sponsorship, Yili spent Rmb 849 million (US$124 million) on advertising between January and August last year, according to CTR.

GroupM executives declined to comment.
