Bali fest to find Asia's best

What will win gold at the Spikes? Amazing work, say the judges.

Bali fest to find Asia's best
In just under a month, some of the world's leading creative stars will gather in Bali to judge more than 3,200 pieces of work from 15 markets for the Asian Advertising Awards 2006.

The region's oldest and most prestigious show, now its 20th year, will feature a number of firsts this year. The judging, for the first time, will take place on-site just prior to a creative conference, Create 06, from April 26 to 28. In another first, the finalists' work will be on display immediately after the judging, and a first-of-its-kind forum -- to be held after the awards presentation dinner at Bali's Ku De Ta -- will allow participants to gain unique insights on the winning work and what makes great creative.

As befits a year when the show marks its 20th anniversary, the 2006 competition is not only the biggest ever, but also tipped to be the most intense in the show's history, as judging is expected to be tough but firm in keeping with the show's tradition.

The record number of entries should make victory that much sweeter for the winners, whose results will be counted towards the Gunn Report. Indeed, past winners of the Spikes have often gone on to success at global award shows. JWT's global creative chief, Craig Davis, who will helm the judging panel, says: "(Going into the judging), I'm going to be open and curious. I'm looking for an idea that surprises, entertains and connects."

The two-day creative conference, Create, will showcase individuals from whom creatives draw inspiration. Speakers include futurologist and co-author of The Technology Timeline, BT's Ian Neild, leading architect Paul Andreu, whose recent projects include the National Grand Theatre of China in Beijing, and award-winning photographer Simon Thorpe.
