Last year’s winner BBDO is the most shortlisted agency this year with 13 nominations in business services, consumer durables, consumer services, food and beverage, non-food FMCG and the pro bono categories. McCann also secured 11 nominations, followed by BBH with nine. Ogilvy & Mather and OgilvyOne together received four as did Lowe and Partners. Dentsu Singapore managed three.
Agencies will present their shortisted work live at the event on 14 and 15 August, through a four-minute show reel, followed by a six-minute exposition on the work. The panel and audience then have a chance to post questions and engage with the presenters.
Sridhar Ramaswamy, director of retail marketing at Lenovo and the chief judge for the event, is looking forward to the format of live presentations. “There’s a great list of submissions,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to seeing a wide variety of work from countries like China, Vietnam, India and so on, giving me the opportunity to compare the quality of work.”
According to Ramaswamy, the winning work should address the specific marketing challenge, while defining the target audience. He’s also stressed the importance of the creative idea, integrated execution and the final results. “We treat marketing as a craft, so we will be looking at how challenging the whole exercise was and how well it solves the problem and delivers results.”
The Advisory Council of the APPIES 2014 comprises René De Monchy, head of marketing with Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore (Chairman of APPIES 2014); Alvin Neo, chief marketing officer of Parkway Pantai; and Goh Shu Fen, principal and co-founder of R3. The council will select the Gold winners from the shortlisted entries.
“The whole objective is to recognise and encourage good work,” said De Monchy. “The quality of work is really high and representative of the work happening in the region.”
The event is set to take place at the National University of Singapore Society (NUSS).
