ADVERTISING GIVES A LOT BACK

Advertising gives a lot back to people who work hard on behalf of their clients.

Advertising rewards those who help build their ad agency's bottom line and reputation.

Advertising pays well especially to those who are brave enough to go the extra mile by creating or selling big ideas that make brands a lot of money.

Advertising can bring fame to those who put their heart and soul into their work.

However, we should never forget how fickle the advertising business can be,

nor how fickle we advertising people really are.

Let’s remember, we make and sell ads, not art.

The work we do today is forgotten tomorrow.

Here’s a little something I learned years ago from the late actor Ricardo Montelban.

We worked together on several TV spots for an international coffee brand.

At lunch one day, Ricardo reflected on his early years as an actor, and how important it was to keep one's ego in check.

He told us about the "5 stages of an actors career", and a few of us sitting at the table equated it to our own business of advertising.

I wrote his "5 stages" into a notebook and later, changed the occupation from “Acting” to “Advertising”.

Try putting your name into it.  And never forget it.

The “5 Stages in an Adverting career”.

  1. “Who is (your name)?”
  2. “Let’s get (your name).”
  3. “We’ve got (your name) at our agency!”
  4. “Get me a young (your name).”
  5. “Who is (your name)?”
