Sabah's hotels continue to attract high-end groups that are looking to mix work with pleasure

Island properties for business events

Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort
The 330-room Shangri-La Rasa Ria is one of two Shangri-La properties in Sabah. It offers
the best of both worlds for conference and incentive groups, with excellent facilities to
accommodate both. It recently opened its new Ocean Wing, which offers 90 oceanfacing
rooms with their own bathtubs on the oversized balconies. The hotel claims they are
for two people but you could easily fit four in with plenty of room to spare. Guests in the
Ocean Wing also have access to the wing’s own swimming pool.
Its largest indoor space can hold 1,000 reception style or 630 for a banquet. The Rasa
Ria’s resort design features a mix of granite and bamboo, adding to its appeal across the whole property. Its big outdoor spaces are also a bonus and ideal for cocktail functions and
outdoor barbecues, well away from other hotel guests. Recent clients of the Rasa Ria
include 370 people from Mars confectionery company, 100 from General Electric and
250 from PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Nexus Resort Karambunai
The Nexus Resort Karambunai seems to have been chiselled out of the jungle on 1,350
hectares of land. The resort offers itself as a self-contained conference facility and is
a 40-minute drive from Kota Kinabalu Airport.
Groups have a choice of a grand ballroom or three smaller spaces and eight breakout rooms.
However the main strength of this resort is its huge outdoor event spaces, including
beachfront areas, gardens and the golf course.
Apart from its 479 guestrooms, it also features six royal and presidential villas, all with their own outdoor spaces that can easily hold up to 300 people each. Recent clients include a large group from Teradata, and a group of 60 from Phonak Shanghai.

Rainforest or Shang Dynasty theme.
The hotel opened its 249 new Kinabalu Rooms in June 2007 and also changed its
name to add ‘Spa’ at start of 2008.
